Backyard Makeover

There is nothing better then an oasis in the desert. Of course we have to think about where we live and what will grow in our area. Grass is less and less of an option for us Southern Californians. But I couldn't bare a cold, boring backyard. So when I redid this small flip house, I wanted to created a backyard that we would enjoy spending time in. When we arrived there was nothing but dirt, dead trees and a fence that was falling down. We started by removing the trees and tilling the ground. Then we planned the backyard and created three separate raised beds, a fake river with desert plants, fire pit and a covered patio. The beds and river covered a large part of the yard without a great expense. Although I was first concerned I was surprised how low our water bills remained. We enjoyed this backyard until we sold the house, I miss our little flip.

When you are thinking about design, regardless if it's interior or exterior. You have to think three dimensional. People often forget to think about their ceilings as a wall or think in flat terms when it comes to landscaping. It's important not to forget the power of a treatment on the ceiling or an interesting light fixture. When landscaping remember to add different levels. Raised garden beds or a pergola are a great way to add dimension and interest.
